The report, first published in August 2023, has now been audited and verified by LRQA Group Limited and given an LRQA Independent Assurance Statement confirming the rigorous approach undertaken when compiling it and the quality of its content.
The Road Map outlined by the Carbon Footprint Working Core Group set up by Sanmar to produce the report and achieve LRQA recognition, included external specialist training for the group itself and associated officers such as those in accounting, administrative, maintenance, environmental roles, plus online internal CFP training for all white-collar personnel.
Sanmar builds tugs and other workboats at two purpose-built shipyards in Tuzla and Altinova in Turkiye and prides itself on the lengths it goes to eradicate or minimise negative environmental impact at both sites, including the carbon footprint of its outside suppliers.
It also operates tug and towage services at six ports around Turkiye with a young, technologically-advanced, and environmentally-aware fleet of tugboats with an average age of under three years.
A proud history of being at the forefront of technological advance for almost five decades, includes building the world’s first LNG-fuelled tugs and the world’s first remote controlled commercial vessel.
Sanmar has taken a strategic decision to put protecting the environment at the heart of its business and is now building a new generation of eco-friendly yet powerful tugs that use hybrid and alternative fuel propulsion systems and cutting-edge technology to lead sector to a new era of low and no-emissions tugboats.
These include the ground-breaking and award-winning emissions-free ElectRA Series of battery electric powered harbour tugs, and the world’s first large, purpose-built methanol fuelled tugboats.
Corporate Strategy Director of Sanmar Shipyards, İpek Gürün said: “Producing a CFR and achieving verification and validation by LRQA is no mean feat, and I congratulate all those involved and thank them for all their hard work in reaching this milestone.
“Being aware of, and continuously striving to reduce, our carbon footprint is now embedded firmly throughout our business. I cannot over-stress the importance of this as the need to protect our planet for future generations becomes ever more important.”
