Since November 19, 2023, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretariat has confirmed 69 piracy incidents against international shipping vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. The attacks occurred between November 2023 and October 2024, as per the IMO's latest report.

These attacks affected various types of vessels: 30% of incidents targeted container ships, 29% bulk carriers, 29% tankers, 10% general cargo, and 2% ro-ro vessels.

Notably, three attacks in August 2024 were confirmed but not claimed by the Houthis, and as such, were excluded from the IMO's reported statistics.

For inclusion, the cases must meet three criteria: the attack must be reported on a specific vessel identified by a navy, media, or coastal state; the attack must be publicly claimed by the Houthis; and it must be confirmed by the flag state or the vessel’s operating company. If any of these criteria are not met, the case is not listed in the report.

This update is based on the IMO's latest report as of November 25, 2024.
