The Iran-backed group, intensifying its attacks, states that this action is aimed at pressuring Israel to cease its war in Gaza.
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sarea announced on Tuesday that the group carried out drone attacks not only on Eilat but also on "other areas in occupied Palestine." Sarea mentioned launching missiles at the MSC United vessel in the Red Sea, following three warning calls that went unanswered.
MSC confirmed the attack
MSC Mediterranean verified the attack on MSC United VIII, en route from King Abdullah port in Saudi Arabia to Karachi, Pakistan. The crew is reported safe, and the company is conducting an assessment while promptly informing the US-led naval coalition in the Red Sea.
A British maritime group reported an incident off the coast of Yemen, noting drone sightings and an explosion. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) confirmed the attack about 60 nautical miles outside Yemen's Hodeidah port. Fortunately, the suicide drones caused no damage, and the vessel continues its journey under constant communication with the US-led naval coalition.
The Red Sea Route still seems unsafe
Tensions in the Red Sea have escalated as the Houthis persist in targeting commercial vessels in solidarity with Palestinians. Two other explosions near Hodeidah were reported on Tuesday, further highlighting the volatility of the region.
The US has condemned Houthi actions, citing over 100 drone and missile attacks targeting commercial shipping vessels with global connections. The Red Sea disruptions have led to companies rerouting vessels, incurring significant expenses.
In response, the US recently unveiled a security coalition to protect commercial shipping in the region, deploying patrols to deter further attacks. The increased naval presence aims to safeguard the vital maritime route amidst rising tensions in the Red Sea.
The situation remains fluid, with ongoing concerns about potential wider regional escalation. The Houthi raids continue to impact the crucial shipping route, requiring strategic responses from the international community.
